Engine diagnostics

Comprises of a function test of the engine, a boroscope of all combustion chambers, peak and compression pressures, emission testing, fuel pump timing checks, lubricating oil analysis, laser alignment and diagnostic checks utilising the proprietary software for many OEM’s.

Emissions testing

Ensuring compliance with MARPOL Annex VI, this can be readily checked onboard by trained technicians using a portable emissions analyser.

Crankshaft deflections

Royston undertake crankshaft deflection as part of a suite of health checks but also before and after all major overhauls on appropriate engines in order to detect excessive wear and the possible bending of the crankshaft, which could be sufficient to cause dangerous levels of fatigue in the webs and bearings, leading to a possible failure of the crankshaft.

Engine performance

Electronically monitor cylinder mean indicator pressure and indicator power without needing to stop the engine. Combustion analysis graphs provide an indication of pressure changes in the cylinders, information on engine performance and power deviation in the cylinders.

Cylinder borescoping

Inspection of cylinders can be used to prevent unnecessary maintenance. Royston can provide a video borescope with an accompanying report with sufficient clarity to provide an accurate assessment of the liner and piston conditions to satisfy owner and class.

Laser Alignment

Utilising in house tooling to measure the laser alignment of marine engines and propeller shafts is critical to maintaining optimum performance.

Thermographic Surveys

Regular thermographic surveys of electrical distribution systems and components such as switchboards, distribution boards, control panels and UPS/battery systems are non-intrusive, relatively quick and easy to carry out and can form part of any predictive or planned maintenance strategy.
